Google Voice: Pros and Cons

I have a phone number that I don't want to give out to everyone, but I also don't want to get a new phone number. So I was wondering if google voice would be a good solution for me. I would just give out my google voice number, and if someone calls me, it would ring my real phone. But I'm not sure if that's the best way to use google voice. What are some other ways that people use google voice?
