Magento is a platform that was originally owned by Varien Inc., which is a publicly-traded company on the stock market. In 2010, eBay Inc. purchased a 49% stake in Varien Inc., and in 2011 they increased their ownership stake to 51%. Therefore, Magento is currently majority owned by eBay Inc. with 49% ownership still remaining with Varien Inc.
