A Student Information System (SIS) is a software application for education establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for registering students in courses, documenting transfer credits, tracking student progress and performance, and managing student financials. SIS databases typically include student demographics, schedules, attendance, and grades.
There are many commercial SIS products on the market, as well as open source alternatives. Some SIS products are designed for specific types of institutions, such as K-12 schools, while others are designed for use in higher education.
A Student Information System is often times referred to as a Student Management System or Student Records System.
