Fintech, or financial technology, is a wide-ranging term that covers a huge variety of different technologies and applications. It can be broadly split into four main categories:
Payments and money transfers: This includes anything to do with processing payments, whether it's PayPal or direct debit payments, or even mobile payments via apps like Apple Pay.
Lending and borrowing: This includes any kind of lending or borrowing platforms, whether it's peer-to-peer lending platforms like Lending Club, or traditional lending platforms like Kiva.
Investing and wealth management: This includes any kind of technology that helps people to invest their money, whether it's automated investing platforms like Betterment, or robo-advisors like Wealthfront.
Blockchain: Blockchain is the underlying technology that powers Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but it has many other potential applications in the financial world.
