Satellite imagery from Google Maps is simply a collection of images taken from orbit by satellites. These images are then processed and put together in a way that allows you to zoom in and see different levels of detail, depending on the resolution of the images.
For example, you might be able to see individual buildings in a high-resolution image, but in a lower-resolution image, you might only be able to see roads and other major landmarks.
