Product design encompasses all aspects of creating a new product, from identifying customer needs and developing the product concept to specifying the features, designing the product architecture, and defining the interface with production. In operations management, product design is an essential part of creating a new product or service.
There are three types of product design:
Functional design: This type of design focuses on the product's function and how it will be used by the customer. It includes specifying the product's features, performance, and interface.
Structural design: This type of design focuses on the product's physical structure and how it is put together. It includes specifying the materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
Visual design: This type of design focuses on the product's appearance and how it will be perceived by the customer. It includes specifying the color, shape, and texture of the product.
