There is no specific educational requirement to become a scrub tech in Illinois. However, most employers prefer to hire candidates with at least an associate's degree in a relevant field, such as surgical technology. Many community colleges and technical schools offer programs in surgical technology, and some hospitals offer on-the-job training programs.
In addition to formal education, scrub techs must complete a certification exam offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). The NBSTSA offers several different certification exams, so candidates should check with their employer to determine which exam is required.
Once certified, scrub techs must renew their certification every four years by completing continuing education credits and passing a recertification exam.
