do people tend to think of am as being earlier in the day or later in the day? do people tend to think of pm as being earlier in the day or later in the day?

Most people associate the hours 8am - 12pm with AM and 12am - 4pm with PM. This is because many people go to work in the morning (8-12am is when the working day normally starts) and get off in the afternoon/evening (4-8pm is when many workplaces end their working day). Furthermore, many people have lunch around 12-2pm and plan to get home around 4-6pm, so they often associate 12pm-4pm with PM.

The most commonly associated hour of the day with AM and PM is 12:00 PM (or noon). This is the time of day that divides the day into two distinct parts: the morning or ante meridiem (AM) hours, and the afternoon or post meridiem (PM) hours. Noon is usually considered the middle of the day and is the exact time when the afternoon begins and the morning ends. Noon is also the time many people chose to take a break from their daily activities, and so it is associated with the end of the morning and the beginning of the afternoon.
