Picnic is an online grocery delivery service based out of the Netherlands. It was founded in 2015 by four entrepreneurs, brothers Michiel and Joris Kooyman, Felix van der Heijden, and Bart Jellema.
Picnic first launched service in the Eindhoven area, and soon expanded to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. In 2020, Picnic opened up operation in 17 other cities in the Netherlands, as well as in Vienna, Austria.
Today, Picnic is still owned and operated by the four founding entrepreneurs. They remain actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business, ensuring that it continues to deliver its mission of making grocery shopping both accessible and affordable.
This commitment to their original mission was further reaffirmed in April 2021 when the company received a large influx of financing from several different venture capitalists. This saw Picnic’s valuation skyrocket to more than $1 billion, establishing it as one of Europe’s top ranked unicorn companies.
In short, Picnic is still owned by the four founders – Bart Jellema, Felix van der Heijden, Joris Kooyman, and Michiel Kooyman.
