The minister for Communication and Technology in India is Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad. He is also the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and the Law & Justice.
Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad was inducted into the government on 30th May, 2019. He is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha representing Bihar.
He has various responsibilities as the Minister for Communications and Technology. These include policy formulation and coordination of the IT sector and telecom, e-governance and postal services. He is also responsible for developing strategies and plans for the electronic industry in India. Apart from this, his other responsibilities include cyber security, space technology, electronics manufacturing and public service delivery initiatives.
Shri Prasad has an impressive political career spanning over three decades. He has held various positions in the BJP and was a former Minister of Coal and Mines in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government (1998-2004). He is behind the passage of several landmark legislations in the Rajya Sabha, including the Triple Talaq Bill, Transgender Persons Bill and DNA Technology Bill.
He has focused on digitalisation of services in India, and has been involved in numerous digital initiatives such as the launch of the Digital India programme, the National Policy on Electronics and the National Digital Communications Policy. He is also an implementation focussed minister, who has been credited for the successful implementation of projects such as BharatNet and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
