At this time, there isn’t a lot we know about the storyline for the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series on Amazon Prime. While the show hasn’t begun filming yet, Amazon has reportedly secured the rights to adapt the material published in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth writings, not just his Lord of the Rings trilogy. That suggests the series will explore some of the other characters, settings, and stories from that universe.
The show is set to explore the Second Age of Middle-Earth and the backstory of the Rings of Power. That includes Sauron’s transformation from Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, to the dark lord we all know and despise. In the current storyline, Sauron is dormant but the show will tell a story of the world before his fall. Other characters and storylines will likely be explored as well.
This opens the possibility of more exploration into different characters and roles that appeared in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies, as well as other stories from Middle-earth, such as the Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales. With so much material to work with, the series could very well act as a companion to the original books and films and provide some greater depth to Tolkien’s world.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Amazon Prime has in store for us!
