Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Unsatisfied with the existing e-commerce products at the time, Lütke, Weinand, and Lake decided to build their own platform.Shopify launched in 2006. In the summer of 2010, Shopify raised $7 million from Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, and Felicis Ventures. A Series B funding round in 2011 raised $15 million from Bessemer Venture Partners and FirstMark Capital.Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange on May 21, 2015, under the symbol "SHOP".
