How do I delete books from Kindle app on iPhone?

I have several books in my kindle app on my iphone that I have read and would like to delete. I have tried to delete them by holding my finger on the book icon until the "x" appears, but when I click the "x" nothing happens. I have also tried to delete them by going to the app's settings and deleting them from there, but that doesn't work either. Is there any way to delete books from the kindle app on iphone?
